What We Believe

Lutheranism is a way of life, and for most of us, it is centered in the cross of Jesus Christ. Everything we say and do flows from that cross, because it is there where our sins are forgiven and life is restored. It is on the cross of Jesus Christ that God meets us. We do not find God; God finds us!

Our worship is liturgical, and our focus is always on the Word of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. We are biblical, and we are evangelical. We have two sacraments, baptism and holy communion. Baptism can be celebrated on any given Sunday, at the request of family members. Holy Communion is celebrated every Sunday at both worship services.

St. John was established in 1833, and is known in western New York as “the mother Church of Buffalo Lutheranism.” Our congregation is a member of the Upstate New York synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
